H/EV Battery Replacement

There are 4 options we offer when it comes to replacing your battery pack:

  1. New OEM battery pack
  2. Certified Rebuilt Pack with New Modules
  3. Certified Rebuilt battery pack with used modules
  4. Certified Used battery pack

When it comes to replacing a battery pack, the right choice depends on what you want to do with your car. If you like it and want to keep it, we recommend buying a new OEM pack. It is the most expensive option, but you get a brand new pack that will last a long time and give you the best performance. There's a new option that just became available in November 2017; a rebuilt pack with new modules. The casing and electronics of a used pack are reused and brand new modules are installed. If you've done some research you've seen how many different companies are selling rebuilt packs. They make all kinds of claims of how it's just like a new pack because of their special balancing and testing techniques. Don't be fooled by these guys; it is not a new pack, it's a pack that's been rebuilt from used modules from multiple different packs. We don't lie to our customers, a rebuilt pack is basically a used pack. We do rebuild packs, and for many customers it's a good option. If you just want to get your car back on the road for the lowest price then used or rebuilt is fine; and we do give warranties on them. Used packs are our preferred low-cost option because they are easier to get into perfect balance (if it's a good pack) despite what these other companies claim, a rebuilt pack can never be as perfectly balanced as a used good pack. We do load testing on used packs and take them through 3 charge/discharge cycles to get all the modules back to perfect balance. There is more information below about our 4 options.

We give a 5 year unlimited mile warranty on new packs. These packs are brand new, OEM from the dealership. Prices are always changing, they have been getting less expensive every year and that trend should continue. For a gen 2 or 3 Prius our price is $2,500 including installation. For all other vehicles please contact us for the latest price. Most battery swaps cost $400 for labor and can be finished and ready to go in 1 day or less; depending on how busy we are. Normally, if you drop your car off in the morning we will have it ready by the afternoon.

New after-market pack

Brand new after-market Toyota modules

Brand new after-market Toyota modules

These brand new modules for Toyota just became available in November 2017. We are offering to install them at a special price with no mark-up to encourage the growth of newpriusbatteries.com. They sell a kit with new modules, bus bars and wiring harness. They give a 2 year 25,000 mile warranty on the kit. We have to swap these parts into a used pack; we charge a $100 build fee, and $300 installation fee. Their kit normally costs $1,600 but they have a special right now for $1,500. So we can get you out the door for $2,000 or less. A pack rebuilt with this kit is basically a new pack. The casing and electronics that are reused very rarely have failures; the part that degrades is the modules. At the moment they are only making these kits for Gen 2 and Gen 3 Prius; however they may make other kits available for all other Toyota hybrids in the near future. There are also new after-market batteries available for Honda hybrids from bumblebeebatteries.com.

used battery pack

If you cannot afford a new pack, we recommend getting a used pack. We are always searching for and buying good used packs when they are available, but they go quick! Any used pack we sell has less than 150k miles on it. Most packs last 200k-300k depending on several factors. We try to get packs that have come for MI and our surrounding states. What kills a battery pack is heat and mountains, so packs from our area are actually the best. We do a thorough testing process on every pack to ensure it is in good shape. The price varies depending on the mileage of the pack, but generally a used pack for a Prius costs between $300-$800. We give a 1 year unlimited mile warranty on used packs.

Rebuilt Battery packs

Rebuilding a Gen 1 Prius battery pack (with the bus bars removed on one side, high-voltage is not present and the pack is safe to work on)

Rebuilding a Gen 1 Prius battery pack (with the bus bars removed on one side, high-voltage is not present and the pack is safe to work on)

Rebuilt packs are a good option in some cases; when good used packs are not available. This is the case for Gen 1 Prius (2001-2003) where used packs, even if they're low mileage, are just too old to be worth the money to buy and replace. We rebuild Gen 1 packs with used Gen 2 modules, which will actually increase the capacity of the battery and gives better performance. For Honda Insights and Ford Escapes there are some companies that do a good job rebuilding these packs with new modules in them and we are happy to install them for you. When we install a rebuilt pack from an after-market rebuilder, we can only give a 1 year warranty on our work, most of these other rebuilders do offer warranties on their packs but if there is a failure within the pack it is the customers responsibility to get a replacement from the rebuilder. We give a 1 year unlimited mile warranty on packs we rebuild.
